Australia Gambling News: Reports on Playtech, Tabcorp, Bodog - Gambling911 - 15th March 2009

Our man on the scene in Australia reports that business is booming and everyone wants in on the burgeoning online gambling industry. Even with news that certain politicians are trying to block the Internet through filtering systems (now deemed as a "failed attempt"), few operators and affiliates of online gambling seem at all concerned.

Playtech

Tingle, who heads up Media Man Australia and gaming offshoot, Casino News Media, reports a rise in profits and has expanded his online portfolio to 6 website portals (4 specifically gaming), and thus far has managed to avoid the more negative side of news, in an industry known for journalists attacking their own. Tingle's background includes 5 years in journalism, with numerous leading news stories to his name. In recent years Tingle's has expanded on his early successes in the online gaming b2b and publicity side of things, notably with Virgin Games - Virgin Casino, PKR, JackpotCity and some hits and misses with PokerListings. Tingle has just signed up a major new client, William Hill, which is proving to be a most profitable and go ahead venture, and has also struck a considerable deal with the head of Online Gambling Insider.

Tingle advises that he's just putting the final finishing touches on their Marvel Slots Online, ready to capitalize on the recent Marvel Entertainment - Playtech deal (Marvel slots were previously all but exclusive to InterCasino). William Hill now runs off Playtech software, so it stands to reason that a number of Marvel themed slot games will soon be available under the William Hill banner, and quite possible via other casinos employing Playtech software.

PartyGaming and their PartyCasino.com are expected to make more announcements regarding the Playtech and Marvel happenings in the near future industry insiders are saying, and the industry awaits good news or bad news from InterCasino and PartnerLogic, which have been effected by the recent wunderkind deal involving Marvel Entertainment, William Hill and Playtech. We will spare you the actual figures and share prices of InterCasino, Marvel, William Hill and Playtech, but InterCasino is looking down, whist the outlook looks brighter for the latter.

Tabcorp Holdings

Suffering a very public major embarrassment, being stung with a 12 million dollar dud cheque from a well known "chronic gambler" (a former casino "whale" we understand), Tabcorp appear to be spending up big on PR. They are also looking for return on investment of their 475 million revamp of their Star City Casino in Sydney. Their casino chain which also includes Conrad Jupiters on the Gold Coast has been not surprisingly watching out for users of Apple ipod card counting software, some of which is said to be going under a name as "card shark"!

Bodog

Americas and Canadian favorite online casino whipping boy, Calvin Ayre of Bodog infamy is still M.I.A., but numerous residences of his are up for sale in what must be the "fire sale of the century". Bodog was once one of the world's Hitwise and industry sector "top ten" websites, but those days are clearly ancient history, as will be his mansions if the squatters are not removed soon. Tingle believes Bodog could enjoy success in Australia, even with the "ghost of Calvin" since his Playboy image would go over well there. Bodog is expected to make some moves Down Under in the coming year. (Credit: Gambling911)

Playtech Online Casinos Attack CryptoLogic Superhero Niche

Playtech announced the signing of a deal with Marvel Entertainment which will allow the gaming company to use Marvel characters for online gambling applications as well as its other casino brands.

Playtech has moved to counter online casino software competitor CryptoLogic's deal with DC Comics. Playtech announced the signing of a deal with Marvel Entertainment which will allow the gaming company to use Marvel characters for online gambling applications as well as its other casino brands.

Such superhero characters as Spider-Man, Blade, the X-Men, Iron Man, and the Fantastic Four will be available for Playtech use under a multi-year licensing agreement. Playtech products involving poker, bingo, and casino gambling on mobile and online systems will be able to incorporate the comic book figures.

CryptoLogic has had a deal in place with Marvel, leading to a number of highly popular video slot machines. CryptoLogic recently expanded its range to ink a new contract with DC Comics that brings such strong brands as Batman and Superman to the software provider's games.

But Playtech's new arrangement reveals cracks in the CryptoLogic control of the superhero universe. Worse for CryptoLogic, the company's current licensing with Marvel expires next year. Potentially, Playtech and CryptoLogic may align with the two competing comic book realities, a major disappointment for CryptoLogic should it occur.

"This agreement is a major stepping stone for Playtech, as it will greatly extend the commercial appeal and cross-selling opportunities of our products. Branded slots are a good way of diversifying our product and attracting new players," said Playtech CEO Mor Weizer.

Playtech Moves Further Into Cryptologic’s Territory: Makes Marvel Deal - Gambling911 - 6th March 2009

The announcement this week that Playtech had signed a licensing agreement with Marvel Entertainment Inc. was perhaps as big a surprise as the powerful online casino software firm snatching competitor Cryptologic's biggest client, William Hill, right out from under their noses. The new deal allows Playtech to use Marvel film properties such as The Incredible Hulk and the Fantastic Four in its branded games inventory. Prior to this week, Cryptologic had the exclusive rights to the Marvel enterprise as so far as gaming goes.

Mor Weizer, Chief Executive Officer of Playtech, commented: "This agreement is a major stepping stone for Playtech, as it will greatly extend the commercial appeal and cross-selling opportunities of our products. Branded slots are a good way of diversifying our product and attracting new players.

"Our customers can now enjoy games with Playtech's market leading software featuring up-to-date Marvel film characters, which have a truly mass market appeal. The proven strength of these brands will allow our licensees to gain market share using the strength of our product. We look forward to working with such a globally renowned and respected company as Marvel to provide an exciting gaming experience for our customers and their players."

Australian Media Man, Greg Tingle, told Gambling911.com: "It's about time that the power that be at Marvel ramped up and added some healthy competition to the casinos and operators looking to do business with Marvel on the online casino side of things. "Playtech have an overall excellent reputation and they are doing business with a number of other casinos that have great service that that we make money with, so in the word's of Stan Lee, Excelsior! ... in Australian that translates to 'You beauty mate". Can't wait to see Australia's own Hugh Jackman come to life as Wolverine with Playtech. Early indicators lead us to believe that the Marvel - Playtech collaboration will be an Oscars award winning match up."

For Cryptologic, once considered among the most stable of the online gambling entities, this is yet another setback that has culminated in boardroom strife.

On Wednesday, Cryptologic released a statement regarding the purported requisition for an extraordinary general meeting of the shareholders of CryptoLogic submitted by Mr. Javaid Aziz on 18 February 2009.

CryptoLogic received notification on 4 March 2009 from counsel to Mr. Aziz that he "does not seek to rely on" the purported requisition for an extraordinary general meeting that the company received on 18 February 2009."

Aziz had asserted that the Board of Management had effectively squandered $4.2M of shareholder funds in an abortive foreign exchange transaction.

Marvel Positives Trickle Down to CryptoLogic - 26th February 2009

Higher profits and expanding markets for Marvel Entertainment may lead to a trickle-down effect for CryptoLogic Limited (CRYP: 4.24 -0.24%). CryptoLogic has exclusive gaming and casino rights to Marvel comic book characters, whose brand recognition is rapidly growing.

Marvel reported this week earnings per share ten percent over industry estimates, plus a growing number of new forms of exposure for company brands. Characters such as Spider-Man, Iron Man, and the Incredible Hulk received boosts in public recognition through highly successful movies.

CryptoLogic had previously based casino games on many Marvel superheroes, such as X-Men, Spider-Man, and the Silver Surfer. New games this year from the slot manufacturer featuring the Hulk and Iron Man move to take advantage of the increasing Marvel brand power.

CryptoLogic also recently signed a licensing agreement with DC Comics, Marvel’s main competitor, allowing CryptoLogic to keep total control of comic superheroes in the gaming industry. The DC brand includes Batman and Superman, the two best-known comic heroes in the world.

The achievement means significant competition for fellow software developer CryptoLogic, which signed an agreement to use the same Marvel characters in its games last year.

The exclusive multi-year licensing agreement with Marvel Characters B.V., a wholly owned subsidiary of Marvel Entertainment, Inc., allows Playtech to use Marvel's motion picture brands, giving it the right to use iconic Marvel film brand legends such as "The Incredible Hulk", "Fantastic Four", "X-Men", "Iron Man" and "Blade", amongst others.
